May Tang is an eleven-year-old Chinese girl from Shanghai.

It’s the year 1989 and her parents are

scared that the government is going to make big changes that will affect them so they make the big decision to move May and her mother to go live in Australia with her big brother Peter.

When May arrives fitting in is harder than she thought, the girls bully her and tease her for the food she eats. May also has to make sure that her mother has a good job and is earning enough money and translating everything for her mother. Then after what seems like a long time of sad and lonely lunchtimes May finds someone who might make those boring and horrible times go away.

This book is really heartwarming, sad and funny at the same time. This book can be pretty relatable for people who feel like they never fit in and it really shows how hard and scary it must be when moving halfway across the world, where the food, culture, and the language is so different.

This book really made me feel so lucky that I can feel safe in this country

I think this book is a really great semi-fiction book and I would definitely highly recommend it to girls who don’t feel like they entirely fit in. This book is really easy to read and is really simple.

My star rating:

Appropriateness: (course language, scary scenes, mature themes for children under 13) This book has no inappropriateness what so ever.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Progress: The progress in this book is really good. The story doesn't move too quickly and is very easy to follow along so you can’t really get lost.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Writing Style: The writing style is perfect for nearly any young children and the dialogue is really simple and there are not many hard words to understand.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Plot: The plot is set out perfectly, I would not change a thing.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
